Grommets - Document Component

 Grommets Tool

The Grommets tool automatically places grommet (eyelet) marks around the edges of a job in a PrintFactory workflow. Use it to position holes consistently for banners, mesh, flags, and other hanging graphics.

Overview

Choose a grommet design, then set how far grommets sit from each edge and whether spacing is controlled by a Count or a maximum Distance between holes. Each side is configured independently so you can meet different finishing requirements.

Opening the Tool

  1. Open the Workflow Editor.
  2. Add or select the Grommets step.
  3. Click Configure to open the dialog.

  • Grommet Type — Pick the grommet design from the list (the standard grommet or any custom designs you’ve added).
  • Left / Top / Right / Bottom — Offset from the page edge (mm).
  • Count — Number of grommets on that side. Select the radio next to Count to use a fixed number.
  • Distance — Maximum spacing between grommets (mm). Select the radio next to Distance to let spacing drive placement.

Tip: Entering the Left offset copies it to Top/Right/Bottom automatically—you can tweak sides afterwards.

How It Works

At run time the step places grommet marks on a dedicated layer at the positions you set. Corners are handled to avoid duplicate marks when two sides meet.

Create and Use Custom Grommets (Editor)

  1. In Editor, create a dot at the required size for your grommet. If it’s smaller than 2.5 cm, enter the size in File → Document setup.
  2. Save the design as an .aur file.
  3. Create a folder named Grommets in C:\Users\Public\PrintFactory (Windows) or /Users/Shared/PrintFactory (macOS), and move the .aur file there.
  4. Restart RIP. Your custom grommet now appears in the grommet list.

Using Grommets in Workflows

  1. Choose the Grommet Type (Default or a custom one you added).
  2. Set the Offset for each side.
  3. For each side, choose either a fixed Count or a maximum Distance.
  4. Click OK, then run the workflow to generate output with grommet marks.

Tips & Best Practices

  • Use consistent offsets (e.g., 25 mm) unless your finishing spec requires otherwise.
  • For long edges, prefer Distance; for short edges or exact quantities, use Count.
  • If a new custom grommet doesn’t appear, verify it’s in the shared Grommets folder and restart RIP.
  • Place the Grommets step after layout/imposition and before cutting.
