My Printer is Feeding Extra Media After My Job is Completed
Issue:
If you experience an issue where you print a job and the paper keeps feeding through the printer and wastes a lot of media, this article is for you. While this issue was originally noted on the Epson SureColor 9570/9500 this could happen on other large format devices as well. This problem is known to be caused by media core slippage.
Media Core Slippage:
- Occurs more frequently with cotton and matte papers.
- Caused by negative tension during backward feeding.
- Core holders don’t grip tightly enough, leading to core detachment.
- This can happen sporadically or start mid-roll without clear indicators.
Solutions:
Core Grip Fix:
- Apply two layers of Gorilla tape to the splines of the hub to improve grip (see article linked below for photos).
Setting Adjustments:
- Skew Reduction: Set to OFF (disables the Sub PF roller).
- Back Tension: Set to Extra High.
- Paper Eject Roller: Set to Use (ensures smoother media exit).
Media Selection:
- Consider switching to sturdier media cores.
Additional Resources:
- Learn more from the Epson Wide Format group at groups.io.
- Tips to fix the issue are referenced from Red River Paper documentation about this problem - this information was provided by an Epson representative.
Checklist:
- Test with a new media roll.
- Ensure core grips are tightened using the Gorilla tape method.
- Apply the suggested settings and monitor for improvements.
If the issue persists:
Contact the Printer Manufacturer or Media Sales Representative
Reach out to the printer manufacturer and/or your media sales representative to report the issue. They may provide insight or confirm whether other users have experienced similar problems with the printer or the specific media.
Inspect the Feed Sensors
Check if the feed sensors are clean, as dirty sensors can cause similar issues. Refer to the printer's maintenance guide for instructions on cleaning and inspecting the sensors.
