What is PDF/X?
PDF/X is a specialized PDF file format designed specifically for the printing industry. When you send a file with PDF/X and select "use PDF/X Output Intent" in color management settings, the system will use the output intent embedded in the PDF/X file as the reference profile for your print job.
PDF/X Versions
PDF/X has several versions, each with specific requirements for different printing applications:
PDF/X-1a
- Requirements: All fonts must be embedded, all images converted to CMYK or spot colors
- Limitations: No transparency, layers, or JavaScript support
- Best for: Simple printing jobs with basic requirements
PDF/X-3
- Features: Supports color-managed workflows and device-independent color spaces
- Color Support: RGB, CMYK, and Lab color spaces
- Advanced Features: Supports transparency and layers
PDF/X-4
- Features: Live transparency, layers, and color-managed workflows
- Color Support: Broader range including RGB, CMYK, and spot colors
- Advanced Features: Annotations, forms, and multimedia support
PDF/X-5n
- Latest Version: Includes PDF 2.0 features
- Advanced Features: Soft masks, transparency blend modes, and optional content
- Flexibility: Multiple color spaces in a single file
Should I Turn PDF/X On or Off?
Important Considerations
When using PDF/X, it's crucial to understand both the benefits and potential risks. Designer settings in applications like Illustrator can significantly impact your final print results.
Common Issue Example
The Problem:
Many designers use default settings in Illustrator without understanding color management implications. The default CMYK color space is often "U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2," which designers frequently leave unchanged.
What Happens:
- Designer creates file with default U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2 settings
- Designer saves as PDF/X format with this output intent
- Printer has PDF/X enabled in queue
- Reference profile is automatically set to U.S. Web Coated SWOP
- This may result in reduced color range for your specific print job
Visual Impact
The document includes comparison images showing how PDF/X settings can affect final output quality. When PDF/X is enabled with inappropriate color profiles, the color reproduction may be limited compared to when PDF/X is disabled and proper color management is applied.
Below screenshot A: Printer has PDF/X turned off in the Queue and then the reference profile is now set to GRACoL2006.
Below screenshot B: Printer has PDF/X turned on in the Queue and then the reference profile is now set to U.S. WebCoated SWOP but the queue is set to Gracol 2006 so there is a mismatch of what is expected.
Best Practices
- Verify Designer Settings: Ensure designers understand color management settings before creating PDF/X files
- Check Output Intent: Confirm the embedded output intent matches your printing requirements
- Test Before Production: Always test PDF/X files in your specific printing environment
- Consider Your Workflow: Evaluate whether PDF/X benefits outweigh potential color space limitations
Recommendation
PDF/X can be beneficial for standardized printing workflows, but requires careful attention to color management settings. Consider your specific printing requirements and designer expertise when deciding whether to enable PDF/X processing.
