Resize & Rotate - Layout Component

Resize & Rotate - Layout Component

Resize & Rotate Tool

The Resize & Rotate tool adjusts the size, rotation, and mirroring of jobs in your workflow. It can apply these changes either to the document pages or the overall layout depending on your choice. This tool ensures your artwork fits perfectly to the intended media or layout before printing.

When to use it

Use this tool whenever you need to:

  • Match artwork to a specific physical print size.
  • Scale jobs to fit printer media automatically.
  • Rotate or mirror content for correct output (e.g., backlit film, textiles).
  • Trim or crop excess areas of artwork before layout or output.

Opening the Tool

  1. Open the Workflow Editor in PrintFactory.
  2. Add or select the Resize & Rotate step.
  3. Click Configure to open the setup dialog.

Setup Dialog

Apply To

Determines where resizing is applied:

  • Document – Modifies the original pages of the PDF before they enter Layout.
  • Layout – Resizes the composed layout or imposed page after prepress adjustments.

Resize Method

Defines how scaling is calculated. The chosen method activates relevant input fields below.

MethodDescription
NoneNo resizing is applied. The job passes through unchanged.
WidthResizes proportionally so the width matches the value entered in Width. Height adjusts automatically.
Width and HeightScales to fit both target Width and Height, maintaining proportions by the smaller dimension to avoid distortion.
PercentageScales by percentage values entered for Width% and Height%. Ideal for proportional up/downscaling.
Scale to FitAutomatically fits the artwork within the printer’s imageable area. Uses media size from the connected device profile.

Resize Dimensions

  • Width / Height – Target dimensions used by Width or Width & Height methods.
  • Width% / Height% – Percentage scaling factors for the Percentage method (e.g., 150% enlarges by 1.5×).

Trim

When enabled, trims the page or layout to the target size instead of scaling it. This is useful when you want to crop excess bleed or margin without changing artwork proportions.

Mirror

Flips the artwork horizontally. Commonly used for reverse printing on transparent or mirrored substrates. In the workflow, this inverts the X-axis scale, producing a mirrored output.

Rotate

Rotates the document or layout by the selected angle. Rotation affects both orientation and bounding box positioning automatically.

OptionAction
No rotation.
90°Rotates clockwise; height and width swap automatically.
180°Rotates upside down around the center point.
270°Rotates counterclockwise; width and height swap.

Variable Tab

Allows dynamic values to be set per job using workflow variables. These can change scaling, trimming, mirroring, or rotation automatically based on job metadata.

How it works

  1. The tool reads your chosen resize method and calculates new scale factors.
  2. If “Scale to Fit” is selected, it checks the printer’s media size and scales proportionally to fit.
  3. If “Mirror” is enabled, it flips the output horizontally.
  4. Rotation values (90, 180, 270) are applied with automatic repositioning to maintain alignment.
  5. For “Document” mode, each page is resized and new thumbnails are generated.
  6. For “Layout” mode, scaling applies to the composed job and its imposition geometry.

Tips & Best Practices

  • Use Scale to Fit when sending to multiple printers with varying media sizes.
  • Enable Mirror for reverse applications like window graphics or textiles.
  • Apply to Document for pre-layout adjustments; use Layout to scale imposed jobs.
  • Be careful with Trim: it removes rather than scales content.
  • Combine with Layout or Printer steps for full automation of scaling and orientation.

Summary

The Resize & Rotate tool provides flexible control over artwork scale, orientation, and mirroring. It ensures your files fit correctly on any device or material, reduces manual prepress work, and maintains visual consistency across all output workflows.
